Learning unit contents
Development of questions, scales and items measuring sociodemographics, socio-affective constructs and contextual variables in contextual questionnaires in education and training. In addition, an introduction to the development of cognitive tests will be provided.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The learning outcomes of this seminar are the following ones :
- explore different frameworks for background questionnaires, non cognitive variables and cognitive domains;
- operationalize the content to be measured in contextual questionnaires or cognitive tests;
- develop questions and items in order to measure adequately constructs and domains;
- know and apply the technical guidelines in order to build items and questionnaires;
- understand the main analytical methods used to assess the psychometric quality of questionnaires and the edumetric quality of tests.
- interpret the analyses and draw the conclusions for reviewing the instruments;
- adopt a critical perspective on findings derived from questionnaire data;
- engage in ethical reflection regarding the use of questionnaires or tests in educational and training research;
- critically document and explain the process involved in developing a measurement scale for a contextual questionnaire.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Theory and practical classes are closely linked.
After two learning sessions, students have to build, analyse, revise items for background questionnaires in a spécific domain. To this end, students will be required to keep a reflectiv journal documenting the intellectual and methodological process followed during the construction of the measurement tool.
