Learning unit contents
The ethical issues addressed in this course primarily concern all roles in the field of training and education (teachers, principals, trainers, educational advisors, educational resource producers, coaches, evaluators, researchers, etc.) where the relational dimension and the question of power relations are central. They involve:
- a search for meaning in complex everyday situations,
- consultation and even collaboration with other stakeholders,
- consideration of existing normative frameworks (beyond the application of standards and procedures),
- an interdisciplinary approach (psychology, law, communication, philosophy, sociology, etc.).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course will enable students to:
- differentiate and understand the connections between ethics, morality, norms, and values,
- understand the diversity of situations in which ethical issues may arise for Master's students in Educational Sciences,
- develop their reflexivity on the contributions of ethics through the analysis of realistic situations, in relation to the roles performed in Educational Sciences.
- analyze a situation questioning ethical issues, based on their spontaneous representations and personal references,
- utilize useful and relevant documentary references related to the chosen situation (regulatory texts, guides, professional articles, scientific articles, etc.) as well as those from interviews with resource persons,
- integrate these elements and resources into a critical analysis of the situation that leads to possible and acceptable courses of action,
- identify and explain the links established with ethical principles proposed in various publications,
- define preventive measures based on case analysis that involve different levels of responsibility in the education and training system.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prerequisites for students in the "transitional program": YTRA9003-1 Travail d'initiation à la recherche en enseignement ou YTRA9002-1 Travail d'initiation à la recherche en formation des adultes.
Prerequisites for students in the "new program": PEDA4045-1 Préparation au mémoire, conception de projet et éthique de la recherche.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Over the course of the sessions, students are provided with vignettes presenting situations experienced by third parties, related to the educational functions of a Master's degree in Educational Sciences and which raise ethical questions. They also have access to documentary resources and interviews with resource people related to these situations, as well as a more cross-disciplinary reading kit (ethical principles, scientific articles), and a series of teaching tools useful for analyzing and handling cases with a dual aim of resolution and prevention.
In groups and individually, they address these situations step by step during class sessions and in the associated homework: clarifying initial representations, identifying central themes, problematizing, decentering by taking into account the perspectives of the different stakeholders in the situation, identifying issues and dilemmas, and seeking alternative proposals for action and prevention linked to proposed ethical principles.
