Learning unit contents

Study of Spanish grammar and practice of the four language skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, and conversation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to deepen the study of Spanish morphosyntax and to strengthen the communicative skills acquired during the first year of language learning.

By the end of this course, the student should be able to apply and explain the grammar rules covered in class, and their communicative competence should reach level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A solid command of basic morphosyntax and foundational vocabulary is required. As such, a diploma or certificate from the Spanish Language I course is mandatory.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The Spanish Language II course is structured as follows: one hour of theoretical instruction and two hours of practical sessions (TP) in small groups each week. Part of the work related to the practical sessions must be completed at home. Attendance at all three weekly hours is mandatory. After two unexcused absences from the practical sessions, each additional absence will result in a penalty to the grade for that part of the course: a third absence will deduct one point, a fourth absence two points, and so on.

An additional hour-alternating between conversation practice and language reinforcement-is offered each week. This session is optional but strongly recommended.
 
Language and grammar practice is compulsory, as is translation, written exercises and active participation in class.

TI students are only required to follow the theory course.

Learning activities will take place primarily in person, although some online sessions are also planned. As part of the UNIC European University alliance, we will be piloting a virtual language tandem project during the 2025-2026 academic year, with students from Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Since this is still an experimental project, the initiative will be limited this year to a small number of students on a voluntary basis. The additional work completed as part of this tandem may be taken into account in the course grading, depending on the participating student's attendance and diligence.

Additional explanations:

January session: a non-exempting but compulsory written evaluation is organised.

Duration: 3h30, including 2 hours for the grammar evaluation (for all students) and 1h30 for evaluation of the practical work for relevant students (except TI). The fact that the theoretical part focuses on grammar does not exempt students from writing correctly; language accuracy-including in the justification of answers-will be one of the grading criteria.

Grade: 70% for grammar, 30% for practical work

The grade will account for 20% of the final grade (May-June session). 



May-June session:

Continuous assessment (practical work) for relevant students (excluding TI): 20%

Inclusion of the grade from the January session: 20%

Written exam: 40% for everyone except TI, 80% for TI

Duration: 3h30, including 2 hours for evaluation of the grammar course (for all students) and 1h30 for evaluation of practical work for relevant students (except TI)

Grade: 70% for grammar, 30% for practical work

Only students who have received a grade of 8/20 or higher on average for the written examinations in January and June, as well as the practical work, may sit the oral exam.

A list of students admitted to sit the oral exam in June will be published after correction of the written exams from May.

Oral exam (excl. TI): 20%. The oral exam will mainly focus on the content of the practical work. A few grammar questions may also be asked.

 
In the August session, the final grade is only made up of the August written (70%) and the August oral exam (30%) for all students, except TI. For TI students, the written part only covers the theory classes and represents 100% of the final grade. The evaluation will cover the contents of the whole year.


The oral exam is individual and covers the content seen in grammar classes and practical work, as well as the mandatory reading covered in class, which students must develop.

Only students who have received a grade of 8/20 or higher in the written exam may sit the oral exam.

Additional explanations about the elements which will be taken into account during the oral evaluations will be given in class.

The use of artificial intelligence for written assignments that may be completed at home should be approached with caution and critical thinking. It is important to remember that artificial intelligence is not truly "intelligent" and produces numerous errors daily, including writing and translation mistakes that this course specifically aims to prevent. The use of such tools must not hinder the learning process of the Spanish language, which will be assessed without the possibility of using these technologies, both during written and oral exams as well as in continuous assessment.
