Learning unit contents

The course aims to provide a diachronic perspective on French-language poetry, from the 19th century to the 21st, giving a prominent place to French and Belgian poetry, without excluding other fields (Quebec, Switzerland, Francophonie). The major currents and major poets will be presented.
It will begin with an introduction to the main principles of French versification (meter, verse, rhyme, stanzas, fixed forms), from a descriptive and analytical perspective.
 
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the major poetic movements and their main characteristics. He or she will be able to situate a work within the history of poetics. He or she will be able to correctly analyze a form of versification.

The exam will consist of an oral presentation of a poet or a movement freely chosen by the student, developed from a perspective of poetic history, but also didactic.
