Course Title: The imaginary of the Resistance
The year 2025 marks the eightieth anniversary of Italy's liberation from Nazi-Fascism, yet almost all direct witnesses of the event have now passed away. How, then, can we continue to tell the story of this foundational moment in Italian history-the Resistance? Who will bear witness in place of the witnesses?
These are the central questions of the course, which will explore the powerful narrative inventions (Calvino, Fenoglio, etc.) and cinematic works (Rossellini) born in the postwar period that continue to shape, in our collective imagination, the idea of antifascist struggle-both in its mythical and anti-mythical dimensions, in its collective and intimate registers, in its drive toward the future or retreat into the past.
The final part of the course will be devoted to how Italian writers of the 2000s have represented the antifascist struggle.
