Learning unit contents
"Popular," "populist," "industrial," "working-class," "committed," and "mass" literature are concepts that describe similar positions and homologous relationships, but which are ultimately quite distinct. The same could be said of their dialectical counterparts: "elite" literature, 'modernist' or "avant-garde" texts, or what is often referred to as "high literature." In this course, we will learn to hone all these concepts, situate them in the history of contemporary Spain, and weigh their epistemological relevance.
The specific subject of study will be Spanish literature between the mid-19th century and 1939 (the end of the Civil War). The course will take a sociocritical approach to literary texts, paying particular attention to the conditions of production and consumption. We will read texts by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Joaquín Dicenta, Emilio Carrere, José Díaz Fernández, Matilde Muñoz, and Federico García Lorca, among others.
