Learning unit contents

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a series of digital tools that will help them to improve their proficiency in Spanish, to better control the variety of Spanish they produce, and to carry out simple digital analyses enabling them to quantify the stylistic or semantic characteristics of text corpora of varying lengths.

We will learn how to use existing text corpora for lexicographical research in Spanish (CREA, CORDE, Corpes XXI, Sketch Engine). We will explore the different features of interfaces for stylometric analysis (Voyant). We will discover software for the automatic transcription of handwritten or printed texts (e.g., Transkribus) and present, albeit briefly, the main steps in preparing a textual corpus for computational analysis (NLP). Finally, we will put the concepts of "isotopy" and "theme" to the test using topic modeling software (DARIAH TopicsExplorer, MALLET).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Prove knowledge of the digital tools introduced in the course, as well as the linguistic tasks they can help us perform.
  • Master the metalanguage used to describe the applications and workflow of such tools.
  • Understand the ethical, epistemological, and sometimes ecological issues surrounding the digital tools presented.
  • Confirm a high level of proficiency (C1 level) in written and oral productions in Spanish.

Level B2+/C1 of spoken and written Spanish.
