Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course systematically presents concepts of grammatical analysis and apply them to the French language by the means, a.o., of tree-like diagrams.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will have the following abilities:

  • ability to analyse any French sentence that is not especially problematic using grammatical analysis;
  • ability to express such an analysis by means of a text or conventional diagrams;
  • knowledge of the main structural issues in the description of French.
In particular, students will be expected (though not exclusively) to:

  • identify and justify the grammatical classes of words (also referred to as "parts of speech"; e.g., noun, verb, preposition, etc.);
  • analyze and justify the dependency relations among words within a syntactic construction (also referred to as "functions"; e.g., subject, direct object, modifier, apposition, etc.), as well as the hierarchy of these dependency relations ("this word depends on that one");
  • in the specific case of coordination, identify and justify the groupings of terms that depend on the same governing element (or conversely), as well as instances of ellipsis;
  • in the specific case of subordination, identify the type of subordinate clause involved (e.g., completive, relative, correlative).
(automatic translation + manual correction)
