Learning unit contents
The course, which requires active participation from students, will focus on the expression of gender in the Italian language, considered from various disciplinary perspectives (linguistics - particularly morphology - sociolinguistics, and so-called "popular" linguistics).
It will therefore address the relationship between norms and usage, variation, types of norms (standard vs. substandard), representations, language policies, and linguistic ideologies.
The course aims to enable students to understand the issues at stake in contemporary linguistic debate and to report on them with rigour and nuance.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- report on the issue addressed according to different approaches
- define the main concepts and notions considered
- use these notions and concepts appropriately
- report on different points of view
- analyse a text that is part of a contemporary debate
in Italian, both orally and in writing.

The oral assessment consists of two parts:
- questions on the course content
- a discussion on a reading assignment completed independently
Each part will account for 50% of the mark.
The assessment will take into account: the quality of language, the relevance of answers to questions, the accuracy of the reading report, the use of ideas and concepts covered in class, and the rigour of the discussion.
