Learning unit contents
This course aims to raise students' awareness of orofacial function disorders by introducing the physiological foundations of the main functions (breathing, chewing, swallowing) as well as the interactions that connect them. The course offers an initial exploration of the different disorders and their clinical manifestations.
Students will be introduced to evaluation methods and to the development of a preliminary therapeutic plan. The course also highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary and integrative approach in understanding and addressing these disorders.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Master the specific terminology related to orofacial functions and their disorders, in order to communicate precisely and professionally ;
- Describe the physiology of the main functions (breathing, chewing, swallowing) and analyze their interactions ;
- Understand the causes and consequences of orofacial function disorders from a comprehensive health perspective ;
- Identify the main clinical signs and report the relevant elements necessary for case history and clinical assessment ;
- Outline the main components of a therapeutic plan, taking into account the patient's specific needs and available information ;
- Situate orofacial disorders within a multidisciplinary approach, by understanding the complementary roles of different professionals ;
- Adopt a reflective and critical stance towards orofacial disorders, drawing on both theoretical and clinical knowledge.

The course takes place during the second semester as on-site lectures (no podcast available). It is complemented by both synchronous online sessions (with recordings provided if technically feasible) and asynchronous lectures. At the end of the course, students will complete a group project involving the analysis of a clinical case.
