- acquire and apply new grammatical skills in the context of written work.

- grammar exercises
- writing exercises (formal argumentative essays)
- selected articles & documents, and the book Harari, Y. N. (2018). 21 lessons for the 21st century. Jonathan Cape.

- comprehension exercises on topics related to the students' field of study.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Core curriculum and consolidation
By the end of the year, students will have achieved grammatical competence in English at the B1+ / B2 level.
The multiple purposes of the grammar sessions are:
- To consolidate everyday English (vocabulary and grammar)
- To master and consolidate specialized language
- To familiarise students with academic English
Practice
The dual purpose of the course is
- to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use
- to develop and consolidate students' mastery of the specific features of the language related to politics
- to introduce to academic English
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Core curriculum and consolidation

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Core curriculum and consolidation
- Grammar theory and exercises, supported by formative assessments (Wooclap / Socrative, etc.);
- Written production exercises;
- Sentence and text correction based on the studied theory.
Practice
In addition to regular preparation work (vocabulary exercises, listening, reading skills and speaking), students will have to do oral presentations.
Course preparation (mainly reading exercises and vocabulary exercises) must be completed at home each week. The time required for this will vary depending on the student's prior knowledge and experience.
This preparation at home is crucial for optimizing class interactions and maintaining the right pace. It is essential to ensure the smooth running of in-class sessions, allowing students to acquire the necessary prior knowledge. As a result, class time can be dedicated to more in-depth interactions, such as discussions, critical analyses, and collaborative activities, fostering active learning.

Weekly preparation work is expected, the workload this represents is variable and depends on the students' level of competence.
We strongly advise students to read articles about the themes discussed in class, on their own and to practice their listening skills at home.

In January: The exam (12% of the final grade) will cover vocabulary and grammar from Semester 1.
The students will have to take two exams in June: one written exam (= 46% final note) and an oral exam (= 22% final note). The written exam in June will include vocabulary and grammar from Semester 2, as well as a writing exercise, reading and listening comprehension exercises.
The oral exam will deal with the chapters from the book 21 lessons for the 21st century. The written and oral exams in June/August are two inseparable parts.
The assessment grid for the oral exam takes into account content and language skills.
Continuous assessment of progress (practice session active participation*, grammar tests, writing test and oral presentation) accounts for 20% of the final grade. Classwork results will be taken into account for the first AND second session.
The 'classwork' grade for LANG9922 is therefore comprised of:
- Grammar tests administered throughout the year as part of the single grammar hour organized by C. Leroy.
- A written expression in formal English completed in class in Semester 2.
- An oral presentation (5%) in Semester 2.
- Preparation for and active participation in practical course activities (5%). For this last category of classwork, any student who has been absent for more than 50% of the course sessions risks being given a grade of 0/20.
Work done during the year will be assessed according to a number of criteria including their content and internal cohesion, the accuracy of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and the range of vocabulary and structure.
As part of the assessed oral presentation organized in Semester 2 on the book 21 lessons for the 21st century, students will be expected to use not only their presentation skills, but also their critical thinking skills.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Core curriculum and consolidation
Grammar assessment is organised through :
- specific grammar questions ;
- other productive skills, especially writing exercises.
Grammar classwork results (= 5% of the LANG9922 final mark) will be taken into account for the first and second exam sessions.*
Participating in the course and attending classes with a hard copy of the syllabus are vital to the learning process.
Regarding the use of language-generating artificial intelligence:
Unless specific instructions are given by the teacher within the framework of well-defined activities, the ULiège Charter on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Academic Work applies.
*In accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), work carried out during the teaching periods (essays, oral presentations, group projects, etc.), and whose marks are included in the calculation of the final mark, is only organized once per academic year. For pedagogical and practical reasons-notably, continuous evaluation, specific supervision, group work, classroom interaction, and the practical organization of presentations-these assessments cannot be repeated in the second session. The grade obtained for this work is considered to be tied to each exam session and is therefore retained for the calculation of the final grade in both the first and second sessions.
