Learning unit contents
This course aims at consolidating the language capacities necessary in everyday life. It also aims at developing the language capacities which will be useful in professional life (reading and writing, defend one's opinion...) and at enlarging the student's knowledge of the contemparary Ducth-speaking world.
Contents of the course:
- study of recent newspaper articles and broadcasts from TV or radio dealing with social, economic, financial and cultural subjects;
- grammar exercises, vocabulary exercises and oral exercises (debates, questions and anwers, ...)
- possible field trips to practice ones linguistic and intercultural competences
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Communication:
The purpose of the course is to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use.
The course will thus allow students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, orally and in writing, about a company, organization or project, taking into account the multicultural and international features of their environment. This will be made possible thanks to ample practice, both orally (listening compréhension, speaking exercises (argumentations by the students, conversations with native speakers of Dutch in the context of field trips) and in writing (reading compréhension, writing exercises).
This is also made possible thanks to an increasing knowledge of economic and financial vocabulary.
CEFRL level of the course: B2
On the condition that the student takes every opportunity that is offered to her/him to learn en evolve and shows an interest for the language.
The student will be able to understand the main ideas of a complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. He can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
He should also be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Strategy:
The course will allow students to demonstrate scientific precision and a critical mind in the analysis of a complex situation.
Adaptability:
The course will allow students to adapt their managerial practice to the needs of a fast-evolving world.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good general proficiency in the Dutch language (corresponding to level B1 of the CEFRL which is the level the student is expected to reach after Level 1 and 2 taught in the Bachelor's degree).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This cours aims at improving the four language skills with respect to business Dutch through the reading of documents, debates, written tasks and listening assignments.
Possibility (optional) to participate in a field trip to Flanders or The Netherlands.

1,5 hours a week during the first semester and 3 hours a week during the 2nd semester.
Students are asked to prepare the exercises and texts on which the course is based.
Regular attendance and active participation are essential.

1) Ongoing Assessment (counts for 40% of the points):
- Thematic vocabulary and Block 3 grammar tests (Block 2 grammar is assumed to be known): one in Q1 and one in Q2.
- Written expressions related to the thematic dossiers for each semester: one in Q1 and one in Q2.
- Debates related to the themes of the dossiers: two in Q1 and two in Q2.
2) Listening comprehension test, during the June session, counts for 10% of the marks
- Questions on an authentic document in connection with the files seen in Q2.
3) Oral Exams during the Sessions (count for 40% of the points):
- January (15%): Response to a topic related to the dossiers covered in the form of an argumentation.
- June (25%):
Oral exam based on an article chosen at random, prepared on the spot. Students are expected to be able to present the main ideas, answer questions about the content, and give their opinion.
4) External Certification: eLAO test (counts for 10% of the points)
Important Notes:
- Participation in each part of the ongoing assessment is mandatory. Any absence from an assessment session (both during the semester AND throughout the year) results in an absence for the semester grade.
- If a student is unable to attend one of the tests scheduled during the year, they must notify the professor by email as soon as possible. A medical certificate (or other document justifying the absence) must be submitted to the concerned professor within the week, that is, by the next class following the test. It must be dated from the 1st or 2nd day of absence.
- In case of a justified absence, it will be possible to retake the test by appointment.
- Erasmus students must complete all parts of the ongoing assessment for the second semester and the June exam. Their points will then be recorded twice: once for the results of the first semester and once for the results of the second semester, in accordance with the weighting announced above.
