Learning unit contents
The remedial course has the aim of revising the basic grammatical structures as well as training reading comprehension skills.
Here is the detail of the CEFRL levels of the course : reading (B1); [speaking (B1), writing (B1)]
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Refreshing and increasing students' knowledge of grammar.
- Activating reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, detecting text coherence.
- Expanding the vocabulary related to the fields of psychology

A basic knowledge of English (equivalent to the A2-level of the CEFRL)

Compulsory placement test on 29/09 from 4:30pm until 6:30pm.

Weekly 90-minute classes in average-sized groups.
The course module will be devoted to revising the basics of English grammar as well as the training of reading skills.
Students will have to prepare the reading file at home for the final exam. This reading file is made up of articles related to the field of psychology.
Regular practise is key to the student's progress.

Further information:
1° JANUARY midterm exam (35%): will assess students' assimilation of the grammar rules and vocabulary seen in class during the first semester.
2° JUNE exam (60%): will assess students' reading abilities as well as their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary seen in class during Q2. It will be based on 1) the grammar modules seen in Q2, 2) the vocabulary of all texts seen in class in Q2, 3) the reading file.
3° CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT (5%): mark obtained on the 6 automated exercises (eCampus), deadline: May 15, 2026.
PLEASE NOTE THAT:
1) If you pass the January exam, you do not need to retake it in June/August (same academic year). However, if you obtain a grade below 10/20 on the January exam, you are required to retake this section in June/August. If you fail to do so, you will receive a zero for the January section. This grade is not rounded up. Therefore, students who obtain a grade below or equal to 9.99/20 on the midterm exam will have to retake it. This rule also applies in the case of a second session.
2) If a student is not registered for the English course for which they took the exam, they should take the exam for the course listed (in error) in their PAE in August (2nd session). Therefore, please double-check that you are registered for the correct course after receiving your placement test results at the beginning of the year (either remedial LANG0040 or level A LANG0041).
3)
- The highest grade is not retained from one session to the next, but the grade obtained during the current session.
- A grade cannot be carried over from one year to the next.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Students can train on-line on the "grammaire de base interactive" (GABi) module on e-campus.
IMPORTANT!!!
All 1st "BLOC" students who registered for the first time at the FPLSE in September 2025 (except see N.B. below) will have to take a placement test which will be organised from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm on September 29 2025 online on ecampus (myuliege). The students who want to will be able to take this test on their computer in amphi 01 (B37) in Sart Tilman from 4.30 to 6.30 pm.
This test will include vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension exercises.
The students who obtain the highest marks will be allowed to take the level-A class in 1st "BLOC" - LANG0041. The other students will take this remedial class (LANG0040-1).
N.B.: Students who have never studied English or have a recent (=2024 or 2023) official certificate attesting that they have reached the European level B1 or B2 in English (e.g. TOEFL or FCE) have to send an email with their last name, first name, student ID, a copy of their certificate including their name, their result & the date (if they took an official language test - see above) to C.VanLinthout@uliege.be for the end of September at the latest.
Regarding the use of language-generating artificial intelligence:
Unless specific instructions are given by the teacher within the framework of well-defined activities, the ULiège Charter on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Academic Work applies.
