Learning unit contents
The course has a B1/B2 (CEFR) level (B2 level for reading comprehension and lecturing). It is essentially an ESP course consisting of:
- Unabridged literature in your field (articles analysed for their linguistic features and content)
- Debates and presentations
- Exam-format exercises (summaries, definitions, descriptions, presenting arguments ...)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the first-year course, all students will have developed a general language understanding and use as well as basic knowledge of the elements of domain-specific English (vocabulary and grammar) seen in class.
This ability will concern the four language skills, namely speaking, reading, listening and writing.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Considering its objectives, the course cannot be seen as an introduction to the basics of the English language.
Therefore, the students who do not have a basic grounding in general English language and grammar (intermediate level - B1) will be asked to participate in a remedial course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course book consists of a series of thematic units aimed at developing the 4 skills listed above, with systematic highlights on the vocabulary and grammar encountered in context.
Besides the work on these units, each student will be asked to take:
- 4 in-class grammar tests,
- 3 compulsory oral presentations,
- 3 written assignments (one at home and two in class).
This will account for 25% of their final mark.
Several other self-assessment tests and a mock exam will also be held in the course of the year.
Due to its particular nature, the English course will not be split into two separate courses, but part of the continuous assessment grade will be given at the end of the first quarter.

Additional information:
Students will have to do exercises at home every week. The work load this represents is variable as it depends on the students' level of competence.
Online grammar modules will also have to be completed on eCampus through GABi (Grammaire Anglaise de Base Interactive).

25% Continuous assessment of progress: Grammar Tests (5%) / Writing (10%) / Oral Presentations (10%)
75% Written exam in June [reading comprehension (true/falses; gapfills; open questions), grammar Multiple Choice Tests, vocabulary and writing tasks].
In accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), work carried out during the teaching periods (essays, oral presentations, in-class grammar tests), and whose marks are included in the calculation of the final mark, is only organized once per academic year. For pedagogical and practical reasons-notably, continuous evaluation, specific supervision, group work, classroom interaction, and the practical organization of presentations-these assessments cannot be repeated in the second session. The grade obtained for this work is considered to be tied to each exam session and is therefore retained for the calculation of the final grade in both the first and second sessions.
