Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course offers an introduction to key elementary statistical techniques used in criminology. Topics covered include: the concept of variables, measures of central tendency and dispersion, the normal distribution, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and inferential statistics, the chi-square test for categorical data, Student's t-test for paired or independent samples, non-parametric tests, correlations, linear regressions, and analysis of variance.

The course also includes training in the use of the free software Jamovi, which enables students to correctly apply the statistical tools discussed.

The course is strongly practice-oriented, focusing on data processing and problem-solving in situations commonly encountered by criminologists.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze data from scientific studies in criminology using basic statistical techniques, and accurately interpret the results.
  • Use the Jamovi software to perform data analyses.
  • Read and understand the results of scientific studies involving basic statistical analyses.
  • Develop a critical perspective on the generalization of conclusions based on sample data.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic use of a computer.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

Each course session starts with a theoretical explanation of the statistical tools during the first hour, followed by a training to the use of the software « Jamovi » on a computer.
