Year-Round Work
Over the 12 scheduled class sessions (if a 2-hour or 4-hour session = two 2-hour sessions), students will be required to complete several exercises based on set themes with specific criteria. One exercise per 2-hour session must be submitted the following session.
The following topics may be covered:
- Formal Layout - Natural or Landscape Layout - Principle of Dominant Contrasts
- Principle of Intermediate-Dominant Contrasts - Color Harmony
- Dominant Contrast of Primary Colors
- Dominant Contrast of Primary and Secondary Colors (Transition Tone)
- Dominant Contrast of Complementary Colors
- Dominant Contrast of Divided Complementary Colors
- Dominant Contrast of Tertiary Complementary Colors - Foliage Study
- White Garden Study
- Monochrome Study
- Garden of Death
- Gardens of Value
From the 9th exercise, an estimate of the work will be requested. The reference catalog is that of the
Calle nursery. The imposed budget per square meter must not be exceeded. Any budget overrun will be penalized with one
point deduction. The landscape architect must have complete control over the budget imposed by the client.
Zero tolerance will be applied to the use of invasive plants in accordance with the Walloon Region decree, resulting in a score of 0/10 for the exercise. The list of invasive plants is in the student's possession, as well as on the website included on the sheet received from the first lesson. Any supporting documents missing when the exercises are submitted will be penalized with one point deduction (elevation, color, estimate).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the 12 sessions (if the session is 2 hours long), the student should be able to create a planting plan in accordance with current best practices, based on the various topics listed below. This will focus on understanding plants and their specific needs and establishing a budget that must not exceed the target.
From exercise to exercise, the student will acquire new knowledge and must take previous exercises into account.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Passed the plant knowledge course
HULH 9705-1 et HULG9179-1
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The Plant Composition course, also known as Planting Plan, is a practical exercise and therefore requires 100% attendance.
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning and end of the class. A missed session without justification will automatically result in a prorated reduction in the grade for the year's work assessment (1/12th per 2-hour session).
In the event of a justified absence (illness, strike, death due to illness, etc., at the instructor's discretion), proof (e.g., copy of the course manual) must be submitted to the instructor at the next session. After this deadline, proof will be inadmissible.
At the beginning of each session, students will take a plant knowledge test (quiz). This quiz will be formative during the class sessions. Afterwards, students will receive information on the topics to be covered in order to create a planting plan. All explanations will be posted on Myuliège in the course materials.
The first exercises will be corrected individually. Starting with the 8th exercise (if the session is 2 hours long), the plans will be reviewed and graded. The 8th exercise will be corrected and evaluated formatively. Starting with the 9th exercise, the certification scores received will be included in the final score, up to 50% of the final assessment.
The use of invasive plants in the plans is prohibited.
Starting with the 9th exercise, an estimated quote for the work will be requested. The reference catalog will be that of
the Calle nursery or another Belgian nursery. The imposed budget per square meter must not be exceeded. Any budget overrun will be penalized with one point deducted. The landscape architect must have full control over the budget imposed by the client.
Zero tolerance will be applied to the use of invasive plants in accordance with the Walloon Region decree, i.e., 0/10 for the exercise. The list of invasive plants is in the student's possession, as well as on the website included on the sheet received from the first lesson. Any missing supporting document when submitting the exercises will be penalized with one point less (Elevation, Coloration, estimate)

Further information:
The Plant Composition course, also known as Planting Plan, is a practical exercise and therefore requires 100% attendance.
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning and end of the class. A missed session without justification will automatically result in a prorated reduction in the grade for the year's work assessment (e.g., 1/12th per 2-hour session).
In the event of a justified absence (illness, strike, death due to illness, etc., at the instructor's discretion), proof (e.g., copy of the course manual) must be submitted to the instructor at the next session. After this deadline, proof will be inadmissible.
These assessment criteria apply to both the exercises and the exam.
The assessment criteria are established according to three general criteria. They are subject to continuous assessment. This means that the criteria or instructions given in class are maintained and form the prerequisites for future exercises. Criteria A: Plan presentation criteria (in accordance with the documents received during the first course)
1) Grid of the areas concerned at a scale of 1:100
2) Graphic scale
3) Compliance with the required graphics
4) The correct name of a plant with the correct spelling = Number of plants + full name
(Genus, species, and/or variety). e.g., 4 Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood'
5) For herbaceous plants (annuals, perennials, ferns, grasses, or ground covers), always
indicate the number/m², e.g., 24 Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances William' (4 plants/m²)
6) For hedges, always indicate the maximum height of the desired hedge, as well as the number
of plants and the number per linear meter. Ex: 52 Fagus sylvatica (4 pl/m.l) (hedge height 1.8m)
7) Surround areas with the same planting with a bold line.
8) Connect the areas with the plant name with a line; take care to avoid overlapping lines and cobwebs.
The plan must be legible and the writing in the appropriate format.
9) Indicate the position of the clump in the layout on a reduced plan (inset) if necessary.
10) The list of plants used in the clump will be summarized in a box by category and in alphabetical order.
(according to Trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, hedge, etc. in alphabetical order), indicating only the number.
For a larger layout, proceed identically for each clump and create a new table.
A general summary of all the clumps. The summary or summaries will be placed
on the plan and may not be a loose sheet under any circumstances.
11) Trees located outside the beds, as well as the beds, must be planted according to XY coordinates or
by dimensions expressed in meters and angles in degrees.
12) For areas of flowering lawns, the names of the plants used without the mixture will be detailed.
13) For shrub or herbaceous plant beds, left free of planting and expressed in %, it is required to
draw up a plan of the desired volumes, classified by zone, and sort the plants in a table according to the volume zones,
indicating the % of plants used and the zone concerned. The exact number of plants will be indicated.
The following statement will be indicated: Planting carried out according to the proposed plan. The plants will be arranged
randomly and grouped with a minimum number of (number to be determined) and a maximum of (number
to be determined) per species. Criterion A represents 30% of the points.
Criterion B: Plant Knowledge Criterion
1) Correct plant diameter
2) Tree habit
3) Plant density
4) Natural layout. Avoid botanical garden-style planting: Module A B C D E F
5) Compliance with the requested instructions and the prerequisites of the previous exercises.
6) Plant composition and association
Criterion B represents 50% of the points.
Criterion C: Feasibility Criterion
This criterion determines whether your plan is feasible and sustainable.
1) Use of invasive plants prohibited (the score for the use of invasive plants is 0/10)
2) Budget overrun
3) Inadequate soil conditions. e.g., planting plants requiring calcareous soil next to plants requiring acidic soil
4) Inadequate site requirements. e.g., planting sun-loving plants under a tree. 5) Poor choice of plants: Inadequate for the site. e.g., using bamboo in a French garden.
This criterion C represents 20% of the points.
Weighting of the final assessment
The weighting of the final mark is distributed as follows:
Year's work: 50%
Exam: 50%
Any unsuccessful part will have to be retaken in the second session; in this case, the final mark will be the lowest mark:
e.g., year's marks 20/50 (40%), exam 35/50 (70%), or 55/100
The final mark will be 8/20 because the skills were not acquired or corrected during the year. The final mark
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
In case of not being able to present the exam for pandemic reasons, the evaluations of the different plans will be used for the final evaluation.
