Learning unit contents

The EU combines observation placements in nursery, primary and lower secondary schools
with face-to-face classes.
It aims to equip students with the tools they need to understand the profile and academic history of the pupils they
will encounter in upper secondary school.
The focus is on analysing curricula, conceptual continuities and discontinuities, and
issues related to the transition from the core curriculum to upper secondary school.
This unit also aims to encourage reflection on the construction of the professional identity of future
teachers of plastic, visual and spatial arts.
- Analysis of the initial skills reference frameworks and the core curriculum in Cultural and
Artistic Education (ECA)
- Identification of discontinuities and continuities in the evolution of disciplinary concepts;
- Research in the didactics of visual arts, particularly in terms of:
methodological issues specific to the teaching of visual expression and ECA,
epistemological obstacles, learning difficulties and teaching materials encountered by
students at different stages of their education (from nursery school to lower secondary school/PECA)
in this changing school subject.
- Reflective feedback on observation placements and analysis of the practices observed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
* explain the evolution of disciplinary concepts through reference frameworks and writings on
research in teaching methodology;
* appropriate institutional, educational and teaching resources in plastic expression
and ECA in order to devise a teaching programme;
* identify learning issues related to the teaching and learning of plastic arts/plastic expression and shed light on them using research writings in didactics,
then propose one or more programmes offering methodological and practical approaches;
* analyse the evolution of students' level of conceptualisation throughout their schooling and the
consequences of this evolution on teaching methods;

Work placement(s)

Students will complete compulsory observation placements

in nursery, primary and lower secondary school classes.

Specific instructions (timetable) will be given during the first class.

Minimum of 6 half-days of observation.

These half-days must include observations specifically related to the student's discipline

(in nursery and primary school: one or more modes of expression of the ECA, including 'plastic expression';

in secondary school: plastic arts education).

Observations in S1 and S2 (nursery and primary school) must be completed before 28 November 2025,

and those in S3 (secondary school) before 17 April 2026.

Observation placements will be undertaken on the student's initiative within the network chosen by them in line with the pluralistic approach followed by ULiège. Diversity in teaching networks should be encouraged in order to provide a better overview of the world of education in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
