Learning unit contents

The course (Internship, Service Learning) has an overall objective of learning through experience of community service. Service Learning is a learning method based on concrete experiences in which students engage in service that responds to a social need expressed by society, and more specifically by those working in the field. They reflect on these experiences and learn from them not only academically, but also professionally and as citizens.

Students must find and do an internship. This internship can take place in different types of organizations (public or private non-profit organizations, non-profit associations, etc.).

The goal of the internship will be expressed as a specific social issue. It may have been identified by the organization before the start of the internship, formulated by the organization at the start of the internship, or developed jointly by the student, their supervisor at the internship location, and their academic advisor. The internship will enable the student to meet the specific needs of the organization and to deepen the critical thinking skills developed in anthropology courses based on the analysis of the activities carried out.

Students must provide the necessary documents to begin their internship (internship agreement, list of tasks/activities), regularly inform the professor of the progress and status of their internship search, complete the internship, and write an internship report.

All information concerning the internship (terms and conditions, documents, official schedule) can be downloaded from the " guidelines" page of the FaSS website: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_7151929/fr/studentfass-reglements-et-formulaires

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the internship, students will:

- be able to adapt and integrate into a professional environment while developing one or more skills;

- be familiar with a professional field and know how to establish contacts in that field;

- be able to gather various types of information at the internship site;

- be able to perform specific, predefined tasks/activities and, based on their analysis of these tasks, contribute to the development of reflexivity among the organization's stakeholders and make proposals;

- have discovered the societal issues behind the activities carried out within the organization;

- also have acquired an in-depth understanding of the societal issues related to their training in anthropology and/or their future profession, thanks to a critical reflective approach to their positionality, values, commitments, etc., developed on the basis of the tasks/activities and incorporating social and civic dimensions;

- will be able to write a summary report and submit its content to the host organization in an appropriate manner.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The learning activities of the course respond to a specific and contextualized social need expressed by a public or private non-profit organization or an organization whose activities fall within the social economy sector. Under no circumstances does this organization engage in activities that are contrary to democratic and humanist principles.

All activities fall within the following broad outlines:

- searching for and completing an internship;
- integrating the teaching of anthropology courses through tasks/activities to be completed and recommendations;
- collection and/or production of on-site material (gray literature concerning the institution, rules, training material, organizational charts, legislation, instructions, plans, ethnographic data, etc.);
- enhancing of critical reflection;
- support for the development of critical thinking incorporating a civic and solidarity dimension in collaboration with Eclosio/Ucoopia (if needed).

Further information:

The final grade will be established based on the professor's continuous assessment, the internship report and the supervisor's evaluation (see the assessment grid). This summary report should be no longer than 10 pages (not including annexes; font size 11; spacing 1.5) and will include, in addition to the description and an analysis of the content of the internship, a reflective section devoted to an evaluation of the personal experiences, the student's contributions to the host organisation and the final presentation given by the student to the host organisation. The report also includes a reflection on the contributions and potential role of the anthropologist in the host organization. An appendix should be attached that provides the materials collected and/or produced during the internship (grey literature regarding the institution, regulations, training materials, legislation, instructions, plans, and ethnographic data, etc.).

All information concerning the internship (rules, documents and schedule) can be downloaded from the FaSS "guidelines" page: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_7151929/fr/studentfass-reglements-et-formulaires
