Artistic relations in the 15th and 16th centuries. The France-Italy axis
From time immemorial, very close cultural and artistic exchanges have existed between France and the Italian cities, and vice versa. In the 15th century, these relations intensified even further, particularly through contacts between European courts, the movement of people, works and forms, or thanks to the new techniques for disseminating text and images, such as printing and engraving. The Italian campaigns led by the kings Charles VIII, Louis XII and François I further strengthened the links between the two geographical areas. The phenomenon is so abundant that we will discuss it in the light of selected examples that will concern the interest of patrons, the artists' travels, the circulation of books and objects or the import of works of art. We will also look at the Château de Fontainebleau, whose decoration, implemented during the reign of François I, can be considered as the apogee of artistic exchanges between France and Italy.
The course is conducted Fridays, from 10.00 to 12.00 (A1/Philo 2). First session : February 6th, 2026.

Introduction to the contextualization of arts with regard to social and cultural history.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
To have followed the course of History of Art and Archaeology of the 15th and 16th centuries given in the 1st cycle, or, in any case, to have a good knowledge of the History of Art of the Renaissance.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will be organized around ex-cathedra sessions. Personal work will be requested from each regular student: this will involve producing the in-depth notice of a work representative of artistic exchanges between France and Italian cities in the 15th or 16th centuries. This notice will be presented orally to other students before being translated into written form.

The course is built around ex-cathedra sessions, during which anyone can intervene whenever he or she wishes. An oral presentation and written work will also be requested from each regular student.

An oral examination will be organised. It will cover the knowledge and methodological subjects covered during the course. The evaluation will also take into account the oral presentation of the notice and its written version. The oral examination will be worth 50% of the points ; the oral presentation of the notice and its written version will be worth 50% of the points.
