Learning unit contents

This is an introductory course to business strategy and the scientific approach to research.

It addresses the issue of the strategic diagnosis of an organization (not limited to commercial enterprises only).

It will cover the organization's mission, vision, goals and objectives, organizational culture, stakeholders, the general context that influences the strategy to be adopted (macro-environmental parameters), competitive analysis, internal analysis of strengths and weaknesses, and many other elements that help to make a serious and objective diagnosis of a particular organization.

The resulting scientific work must also demonstrate knowledge of the main quality standards for scientific writing. The spirit of analysis, data processing, mobilization of scientific sources, strict formalism, must be considered as tools for learning scientific rigor.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student should be able to :

- know the different ingredients of strategic analysis;
- master the tools related to the strategic diagnosis of an organization;
- apply a strategic analysis approach to a critical organization;
- Adopt a critical look at the strategic choices made by an organization;
- Formulate recommendations resulting from a strategic diagnosis.

At the end of the scientific work, the student should be able to :

- Identify the problematic of a subject of reflection
- Determine a specific objective and clear hypotheses in a research work
- Search, select and synthesize information from scientific sources.
- Criticize this information
- Identify and reformulate converging and diverging arguments
- Take a critical look at the argumentation
- Confronting authors' theses with other theses
- Select consistent arguments to formulate an opinion
- Work in a team, i.e. share tasks, submit individual work to the group for approval and share the results obtained.

The final evaluation will be based on :

- an individual written exam on strategy knowledge

- a written report (in group)

 

To pass the course, students must pass the individual exam (i.e. at least 50%). If you fail the exam, your group work grade will not be taken into account in calculating your final grade.

 

For the second examination, the exam will no longer be a MCQ. Depending on the number of students concerned, the exam will be either oral or written, with open-ended questions.
