The course will consist of various theoretical modules essential for the proper management of a residential facility for older adults, namely:

  • Regulation on the supply and dispensing of medicines
  • Role of Public Social Welfare Centers (CPAS): social action and emergency assistance
  • Food chain safety
  • Waste management
  • Annual accounts
  • Specific accounting of Public Social Welfare Centers (CPAS)
  • Special pricing provisions for residential care facilities for older people
  • Grants for investments in residential care facilities for older people
  • Occupational medicine
  • Work accidents and occupational diseases
  • Specific aspects of care for older people
  • Nutrition and the enjoyment of food
  • Activation and recreational activities
  • Development of the facility's life project
  • Support for older people with disorientation
  • End-of-life support

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the needs of a residential care facility for older adults by applying principles of financial management, team management, and life-project development.

  • Connect theoretical knowledge (organization of care, nutrition, regulations, etc.) to concrete situations observed during the internship.

  • Critically evaluate field practices with regard to quality, safety, and resident well-being standards.

  • Propose realistic improvement strategies that integrate human and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • Theoretical lectures (extra-cathedral, in person) covering management, regulations, quality and safety, knowledge of the older adult, animation, and nutrition

  • Observation internship: 40 hours in a nursing home (including observation, reflective notes, and report writing) under a formal agreement

  • Reflective practice: individual written work linking field observations to theoretical content

Work placement(s)

40-hour internship

Practical details (placement selection, agreements, calendar, report requirements) and evaluation criteria will be presented during an information session in the first semester
