Introduction
The introduction gives students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the basic concepts in waste management and gives them the tools to be able to respond to basic questions, particularly regarding waste management legislation.
Collection
The aim of addressing the different types of waste collection is to explore the main methods of waste collection currently in use as well as the types of waste, illustrating them with practical examples. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of waste collection will be explained. Students will be able to identify and critically analyse these types of collection.
Waste in public spaces
Having addressed the types of waste collection, we will look at the production of waste in the public space and public cleanliness. A significant quantity of waste is produced outside the home and the workplace. The course will give students an awareness of the impact that the production of waste can have on the public space for companies and for citizens, as well as the mechanisms available to address this situation.
The idea of introducing a deposit on cans and plastic bottles in Belgium will be critically analysed with students in order to identify the advantages and disadvantages and to illustrate the complexity of how to improve the situation of waste management and public cleanliness.
Recycling
This chapter aims to address the concept of recycling and waste recycling at all stages of the value chain: from the workplace to the home, during collection, in "recycparcs", in the street, in recycling centres, in processing plants, etc. By looking at the example of a packaging, metal and cardboard recycling centre we will address the stages in the recycling process and the various technologies needed to be able to recycle 16 different elements of packaging waste, with a particularly high purity level and a limited loss of material.
Processing tools
The main existing waste processing tools will be addressed from structures aimed at reuse through to technical landfill sites. The question of the complementarity of processing tools will also be addressed, particularly recycling tools and energy recovery. The practical example of a unit of energy recovery will illustrate the technical nature of modern tools that make it possible to process waste that is produced. The main aspects relating to personal safety and waste facilities will also be covered.
