Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the main stages of drug development, from discovery to market authorization.

  • Describe the methodology of clinical trials and their key features (comparison, causality, statistical significance, power).

  • Differentiate between various types of clinical trials (traditional, pragmatic, cross-over, equivalence) and discuss their advantages and limitations.

  • Assess the reliability and validity of a diagnostic test using appropriate statistical parameters (sensitivity, specificity, ROC curves, etc.).

  • Appraise the scientific quality of published studies and identify potential methodological biases.

  • Understand the role, development, and use of clinical practice guidelines.
  • Develop critical thinking skills towards data from scientific literature and clinical recommendations.

The course is delivered mainly through lectures (ex-cathedra), supported by audiovisual material and videos illustrating theoretical concepts and practical examples.
These lectures are complemented by independent work at home, allowing students to review the content, deepen specific topics, and prepare for the assessment.
