Learning unit contents

This seminar aims to cover the multiple facets posed by environmental issues and to respect its complexity

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim is to open the field of environmental questioning in term of its "integrated" character, i.e. by giving equal space to each of its protagonists. This seminar is centred around case studies.
It aims to make the student aware of interdependence, but also the contradictions which can exist between different facets (scientific, technical, regulatory, socio-economic) of an environmental issue.
It aims to address specific information on an environmental issue, i.e. information of a heterogeneous, fragmented and incomplete nature.

The seminar is based on articulating skills through group and individual work.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A good knowledge of French is an asset

This seminar requires and develops critical thinking.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Its operating principle consists of alternating between several activities:

  • a preparatory phase
  • plenary sessions with presentations by speakers and stakeholders involved in the issue, who will be the source of the data you will be working on
  • a field visit to supplement your data
  • small group work sessions
aimed at a) characterizing the dimensions of the controversy in a situated and contextualized manner, b) mapping the actors and issues, c) characterizing and comparing the actors' rationales, d) articulating these different elements by proposing an integrated definition of the dimensions, positions, and points of debate that matter from the perspective of a solution strategy.

  • individual assignments
  • a group presentation
These are active teaching methods and an inductive approach to analyzing discursive data collected during the seminar.

The e-campus platform is used as a digital support.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Additional explanations:
Continuous assessment is carried out by a panel of supervisors. It is based on the evaluation of individual work (assignments scheduled in the timetable and exams outside the exam session) and collective work (evaluation of group work and group reports).
These assessments will include participation.

Given the iterative and contextualized nature of the teaching, participation in educational activities is mandatory and taken into account in the assessment. It also determines whether students are allowed to take the exam.

The overall grade is composed of:
- a grade for individual work in continuous assessment (25%)
- a grade for group work and group report in continuous assessment
(25%)
- a grade for the written exam (50%)
Absence from the written exam will result in an overall grade of absence.
Continuous assessment cannot be carried out in the second session. In the second session, the grades for individual work (25%) and group work (25%) remain valid.
