Learning unit contents
The course Visual Communication (Theory and Analysis) offers a theoretical introduction to the foundations of the language of still and moving images. It will address, among other topics, the image as material, medium, and object of communication; framing; composition; text-image relations; intertextuality; editing; and the principal types of transitions.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Although primarily devoted to the theory and analysis of visual communication, the course will also enable students to acquire an initial set of enunciative, pragmatic, and aesthetic choices with which they will inevitably be confronted in their future professional practice as communication specialists: Which point of view should be adopted to convey a given message? Which image format should be selected according to the primary target audience? Which markers of enunciation are appropriate for which type of reading contract? and so on. By the end of the course, students will also have mastered the essential components of the bilingual (French/English) terminology of the language of still and moving images.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A passive and active proficiency in English (oral and written expression).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Face-to-face.
The course will alternate ex-cathedra presentations, screenings, collaborative sessions of analysis with the students, and case studies. Four sessions will also be devoted to the screening and discussion of practical group works (framing and editing) carried out by the students. Participation in these exercises is mandatory.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
