Learning unit contents

The filmmaking workshop encourages students to reflect on the documentary approach to a universal theme, starting from a personal point of entry. It provides a space for critical exploration of images, sounds, and the editing of films in progress. Each group of students is required to produce a video-based film on a theme assigned by the guest lecturer, Christophe Hermans.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The filmmaking workshop aims to deepen students' understanding of audiovisual language through the practical exercise of creating a video portrait. This hands-on learning of the various parameters involved in moving from theory to practice provides students with the opportunity to address the aesthetic and ethical questions inherent in filmmaking, and in particular in the making of a portrait.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Having completed the course Audiovisual Techniques (CINE0039) is an asset, but not a mandatory prerequisite.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The workshop is taught by filmmaker Christophe Hermans.
Preparatory sessions take place during the first semester. In these sessions, students engage in discussions on documentary filmmaking, based on a selection of films screened in class. They are first asked to develop a synopsis and a statement of intent.

In the second semester, the production dossier is completed and students move on to the realization of their project, progressively refining it through several collective discussions, which truly form the core of the production process. Each student is thus encouraged to develop their ability to receive creative feedback and to provide constructive criticism on the work of their peers.

In parallel with the filmmaking workshop, technical modules are offered at LICAM to support students in the practical implementation of their project. These workshops cover the main aspects of documentary film production:

  • technical breakdown

  • cinematography

  • sound recording

  • editing

  • sound mixing

  • color grading
