Learning unit contents

This intensive English class aims to both further develop students' mastery of English and introduce specialized language through the illustration and use of the specific linguistic features enabling the discussion, analysis, conception, and follow-up of architectural projects.

The organization of this class - around 10 3-hour sessions coupled with online work - allows weekly immersion and thorough work of all the language skills involved in effective communication in the target language through domain-specific workshops highlighting collaboration and feedback with and by peers and tutor.

The objective set by the Faculty is to validate B1+ level according to the CECR.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This class will help students lay the foundation of effective and comfortable communication in English in a professional context through systematic work on the four language skills (i.e., listening, reading, speaking and writing).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

This class is only meant for students who did not pass the B1+ assessment (listening/ reading/ grammar/ vocabulary) in bachelor's.

Students who feel the need to further develop some skills are invited to consider the options proposed by the ISLV. Further information is available at https://www.islv.uliege.be/cms/c_10332480/fr/institut-superieur-des-langues-vivantes. Signing up should be done online by September 28th.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

These objectives will be pursued through:

  • the analysis of authentic documents (press and videos),
  • written production exercises including note-taking and short argumentative essays,
  • formal and informal oral presentation and discussion of and around architectural projects,
  • systematic analysis of relevant elements of advanced grammar structures.

Further information:

Marked classwork (20%): 1/20 selected online grammar tests + 1/20 in-class writing + 2/20 group oral presentation

Final Exam (80%): 14/20 written exam (reading and listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing) + 2/20 oral exam

In accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), work carried out during the teaching periods (essays, oral presentations, group projects, etc.), and whose marks are included in the calculation of the final mark, is only organized once per academic year. For pedagogical and practical reasons-notably, continuous evaluation, specific supervision, group work, classroom interaction, and the practical organization of presentations-these assessments cannot be repeated in the second session. The grade obtained for this work is considered to be tied to each exam session and is therefore retained for the calculation of the final grade in both the first and second sessions.
