Learning unit contents

The development and adoption of digital tools, particularly AI, has grown significantly in recent years, not only in industry in general but also in the world of architecture.

In this course, we examine three digital practices in particular:

- Generative AI for the production and modification of architectural images;

- Digital fabrication and the challenges of non-standard architecture;

- Visual programming for the definition of generative parametric models using the Grasshopper tool.

Studying and mastering the effects of these tools on the design process will enable students to make relevant decisions for each specific project. The course will also help students, as future practitioners, to maintain a critical view of the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of these tools, in comparison with more 'traditional' tools.

This course aims to broaden students' perspectives and curiosity, equipping them to face the challenges of a future society that will demand ever greater technical expertise and performance.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Critically manipulate IAGs, from prompt definition to fine-tuning;
  • Implement the basics of digital fabrication, in particular 3D printing and laser cutting, and understand the challenges from the perspective of architectural design and production file generation;
  • Create a basic parametric model using Grasshopper;
  • Identify the main challenges of computational design today and develop a critical and personal perspective on its relationship to architectural projects.
