Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course aims at exploring the basic components of human resources management (HRM) policies adopted by modern companies, putting the emphasis on their main assumptions, their potentialities and their risks. It lies upon the fundamental hypothesis of a direct link between organisational structures and HRM models.

Far away from offering a detailed directory of techniques, the course aims at highlighting the main orientations of current HRM policies and their modalities in various organisational contexts.
It thus envisages the following items: organizational entries (recruitment, selection, induction), training & skills development, evaluation and careers, compensation & benefits, labour time flexibility, social relations & restructuring processes.

The position of the HR department is also envisaged through a critical analysis on the main evolutions of this function.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objectives are both analytical (diagnosis of HRM policies) and theoretical (initiation to current debates in HR literature).
This course contributes to the following Intended Learning Outcomes :

ILO-1 : To strengthen knowledge and understanding of management disciplines and its legal, policy and social context.
ILO-2 : Gaining the knowledge and understanding of one of the proposed fields of concentration (HRM)
ILO-4 : To acquire the capacity to research autonomously and methodically the information needed to solve a complex, transversal management problem.

ILO-7 : Being capable of professional team work.

ILO-9 : Developing a critical sense (arguing).

ILO-12 : Professional capacity for oral communication.

Continuous assessment

Further information:

The assessment consists of two elements. Firstly, students will be invited, in small groups, to give an oral presentation on a contemporary HRM issue from the perspective of managerial and professional literature on the one hand, and scientific literature on the other. These presentations will be given in the presence of a guest speaker from the world of HRM (50% of the final mark).

In addition, each week, students will be asked to carry out a diagnosis of the dominant HRM model and the positioning of the HR department in the company from which the guest comes; these diagnoses must be carried out live and finalised before the end of each session (50% of the final mark). Attendance is compulsory and students may be penalised if they fail to attend class.
