Learning unit contents

This teaching unit includes problems involving blood "ells" (red cells, leukocytes, platelets) as well as coagulation and fibrinolysis. Biochemistry, physiology and histology teach basic physopathologic concepts. Diagnostic details, nomenclature and treatment are not the goal. Physiology and biochemistry are interested in the steps of coagulation processus and its regulation as well as interactions between coagulation and inflammation. Some aspects of physiopathology of coagulation will be discussed.Heme elaboration and haemoglobin synthesis as associated diseases are also described. Morphological and functionnal features of differentiation of the blood cells are described in Histology as well as the cells participating in the inflammation (lymphoid system).
Functional histology of primary and secondary lymphoid organs.
In more detail, the class on biochemistry and physiology of the hematological module is based on the following table of contents:
-Development of erythrocytes: erythropoiesis
-Vitamin B12
-The particular metabolism of erythrocytes
- Degradation of erythrocytes
-Molecular structure
- Iron metabolism
- Oxygen transport
-CO2 transport
-Hemoglobin as a buffer system
-Inactive hemoglobins and abnormal hemoglobins
- Degradation of hemoglobin
Blood groups
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
Hemostasis: biochemical aspects
- Introduction
- Partners in primary hemostasis
- The different stages of primary hemostasis
- Partners in secondary hemostasis
- The different stages of secondary hemostasis
- Fibrinolysis
- The central role of thrombin

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To know major mechanisms leading to inflammation due to infection.
To know the mechanisms and steps of coagulation as well as innate or therapeutics mechanisms of activation and inhibition.
To know major biological tests used to study blood composition.
To know the respiratory function of the blood.
To be able to define medical terms that relate to the blood.
To know and to be able to define the various types of anemia.
To know the major diseases of coagulation.
To know hematopoiesis, blood cells end major growth factors.
To be able to describe and identify primary and secondary lymphoid organs. To be able to explain the relation between their structure and their function.
A list of the objectives will be available on e-campus.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

See the program of the courses.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This teaching unit is multidisciplinar. It includes a majority of theorical courses completed with practical activities (MEDE0122 and MEDE0123) and analysis of clinical cases (APPR0122).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face teaching. Distance-learning on e-campus site for some practical activities (MEDE00122 and MEDE0123).
All biochemistry and physiology classes are podcast.

Recommended or required readings

The slides used in the course and written notes will be available on e-campus. Syllabi are available at AREM. Reference books are provided by the educationnal office.
