Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course is an introduction to amphibian ecology and conservation. It is at the interface between fundamental and applied sciences: from knowledge to conservation. It encompasses therefore concepts that can be applied generally to freshwater organisms.
The course consists in (1) a presentation of species diversity mainly in temperate regions ; (2) a synthesis of their biological particularities: life cycle, intraspecific diversity, habitat, feeding habits, reproductive behaviour, sensory perspection ; (3) an analysis of their status, decline and management in function of varied risks: habitat change, pollutants, invasive species, emerging disease.
The second part of the course is integrative and participative, lead by the students on specific topics presented to the class (including using a "power point").
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aim at giving the necesary bases for an in-depth personal research in ecology, ethology and amphibian conservation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Practicals consist in a bibliographic report in a specic topic in amphibian conservation by groups and then the presentation and exchanges between students.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
The lectures take place in the first quadrimester. Bibliographic report is requested before the last Monday before christmas. The oral presentation ("power point" presentation) is associated to a round table where the students and other participants can interact. The modalities could be updated due to the sanitary crisis.
Recommended or required readings
Some books (not obligatorily) will be recommended during the lectures. A selection of publications is provided on ecampus.
In-depth bibliographic search is mandatory for the bibliographic reports (see vade mecum on e-campus)
The different publications of members of the lab are available on the website: https://www.leca.uliege.be
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Written work / report
Additional information:
The evaluation is based on the written bibliographic report, its oral presentation (power point) and the discussion during the round table, including the different students of the class. The instructions for the preparation of the report are in given on e-campus; all detailed points being used for the final note.
Work placement(s)
No visit of sites planned in 2022-2023 given the periods during which is given the class this year. Visits on demand with member of the labs might be possible in spring.
The modalities of the course are likely to change in 2023-2024.
Organizational remarks
The lectures are given in the first quadrimesterr (2 half days) and the participative part in January.
