Learning unit contents
This course deals with the literature developed in various disciplinary fields of the Social Sciences on the subject of food. This literature starts from the observation of the complexity of food choices and practices, which are based on elements of a symbolic, affective, social, cultural, economic and political nature, among others. Food acts are not only determined by the physiological needs to which they respond, but they are also dictated by individual and collective factors that impact on the choices and tastes of individuals, and which have consequences that go beyond the organic contribution of food to the human body. These processes will be explored through readings and ex-cathedra lessons, including the presentation of concrete examples of studies in this field, with a particular focus on certain themes such as food issues related to gender and cultural diversity. Students will also be supported in carrying out a fieldwork that aims to interrogate certain food practices in order to understand their complexity.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims to provide students with the theoretical and methodological tools to understand food as a complex fact, involving factors and issues that go beyond a purely biological consideration of food issues. The aim is to increase the complexity of how students will relate to these issues in their future professional practice.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prior knowledge of certain socio-anthropological concepts is an advantage but not essential, given the introductory nature of this course and the specific topic covered. A knowledge of written English is necessary for the reading of English texts. The bibliography will nevertheless be adapted according to the students' language skills.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will be structured around theoretical lessons (14 hours) and practical work (6 hours) carried out mainly in class.

In addition to ensuring their active presence in class (5 points), students will complete a written assignment (15 points) including a restitution of the theoretical elements presented in class, as an introduction, and the analysis of the materials produced during the fieldwork, deepening the themes that emerge through a subsequent bibliographic research.
