Learning unit contents

Historical and philosophical introduction to health ethics (medicine, medical and biomedical sciences, public health)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Health Ethics as a practise of Modern societies (historical perspective)
Ethics in a philosophical perspective (moral theories)
Ethics as a tangible process of enquiry and problematisation (seen through the Belgian Advisory Committee on Bioethics Opinions and other documents)

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

No particular pre-requisites. The courses proposes a social sciences & humanities approach of health ethics (philosophy, history, social sciences, science studies)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Series of lectures with pptx presentations. Discussions with students upon request. A podcast is available immediately after the lecture and until the end of th academic year.

Additional information:

Written assignment based on a series of open questions. The assignment must be written individually, according to the formal writing instructions delivered by the Professor before the winter holidays. The assignement is to be delivered on a scheduled day and time, either by email or hand-to-hand (the instructions will be given in due time). Assignements that are before or over the deadline will not be taken in account. If an arrangement is needed, please contact the Professor.
 
Criteria : knowledge, right answers, clarity of the language and the argumentation, quality of information, accordance with the formal writing instructions.
