Learning unit contents

  • Definition and evolution of the concepts of health and public health.
  • Introduction to the history of public health.
  • Introduction to the "One Health" concept and sustainable development.
  • Introduction to ethical issues in public health.
  • Introduction to health determinants.
  • Identification of the data sources about the state of health.
  • Introduction to health promotion and prevention.
  • Identification and prioritization of problems and health needs: health needs, health indicators, surveys, consensus, sources of data on health status.
  • Introduction to planning, programming and evaluation in health.
  • Introduction to the notions of universal health care coverage and primary health care
  • Introduction to International Public Health.

General objectives




  • Learn basic concepts in the field of public health.
Specific objectives




  • Knowing the evolution of health and public health concepts and take a critical review of different definitions of health and public health.
  • Make connection between different concepts integrated into the public health concept.
  • Identify and prioritize problems and needs in public health.
  • Identify the stages of planning, programming and public health evaluation.
  • Knowing the great quality principles for any action in public health.
  • Identify the skills and actors in the landscape of the Belgian and international public health.
