Learning unit contents
This course is devoted to the study of meaning in language and will address current issues in lexical semantics and discourse analysis from the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics.
The course is based on the following four modules:
- Introduction to semantics and cognitive linguistics;
- Conceptual Metaphor Theory, applied to the analysis of political discourse;
- Language and Gender;
- Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- master the basic concepts of lexical semantics, cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis;
- read specialized scientific articles on semantics and discourse analysis;
- use the theoretical concepts discussed in class to analyze authentic linguistic data;
- make an oral presentation of a scientific study on one of the modules covered in the course.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
There are no formal prerequisites, but a strong curiosity and interest in the study of language are welcome.
Students are also expected to have a sufficient command of English.

The evaluation will consist of
(1) the redaction and presentation of an original research paper (80%);
(2) the presentation of a scientific article (in class)(20%).
