Learning unit contents
Academic year 2022-2023:
"Seeking God. Monasteries, beguinages and other convents in Western Europe in the Middle Ages"
Architecture, sculpture and wall painting underwent a remarkable boom during the Romanesque period on the construction sites of vast and numerous abbeys and convents. It is however seldom underlined that the boom continued during the Gothic period, all the more since new orders were being created and imprinting their specificities onto their buildings.
We will at first make ourselves familiar with the Western monastic world through the study of their founding texts, their main figures and their ruling principles - the lessons of the seminar will then consist primarily of virtual visits of selected monastery complexes, from Castilla to Pomerania, from Irland to the Czech Republic.
Excursions to Stavelot (7th.-16th. Century) and Villers-la-Ville (13th. Century) will be organised.
