Learning unit contents

This year 2022, our workshop Q3 will develop around the question of inhabiting public space, a meeting place for the inhabitants of the district, a place for punctual events, a place of extension of the inhabited private sphere.

We have chosen to focus on the Place de l'Yser, which has recently been developed but is little occupied except for some of its boundaries. We are going to study the potentialities of the place as for the reception of ephemeral installations in connection with the expectations of the inhabitants of the district, with a focus on the setting in light of an appropriable public space.

We have requested the intervention of two speakers, Anne Rondia and Isabelle Corten, at two strategic moments in our workshop, and hope for the presence of Mr. Beudels, president of the neighborhood committee.

This exercise takes place in connection with the activity of the Emulation "Lumières sur la place de l'Yser" which will take place on September 15 and October 7.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The exercise consists in questioning the atmosphere, the vitality of a public space and to act so that it adjust at best to the profiles of the occupants.

The objective of the workshop will be to associate the functional and affective dimensions of an inhabited place via the environment, the building, the materials and the colors, the lights, the openings, the thermal properties, the quality of the air, the furniture, the decoration, as well as the kinesthetic/tactile/sound sensations.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

All the notions learned in the workshops and theoretical courses of the first 4 years are reviewed and extended through the new projects.
The application of the right dimensions is an absolute prerequisite.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The main teaching device is the workshop. It takes place mainly in presentations and group critiques. Some devices are interspersed, such as internal workshop presentations, quick isolated exercises, study visits or trips, interventions of internal or external speakers.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

The pedagogy tends to develop the initiative, the critical spirit, the rigor and the efficiency of the student ("knowing how to be") to lead him in a coherent way in realistic projects as well at the level of the urbanistic and architectural options as at the level of programming, structural, normative and environmental.

The exercise is carried out in the workshop in small groups (2 to 4 students).

Physical presence at the workshop is mandatory during the whole workshop following the schedule communicated at the first session.

Attendance at evening sessions (2 sessions) is also required.
