Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The two first session will be devoted to the presentation of the formal differences between scientific and non-scientific literature and will focus on trends in development anthropology and more specifically on discourse analysis. During this first session, the lecture grid will be presented to you. All the other sessions will be based on texts dealing with various themes in the field of development which we will discuss in order to understand the differences between the types of publication.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the reading, comprehension and analysis of scientific articles, and to provide them with the tools allowing them to distinguish gray literature, scientific and non-scientific literature in the field of development. Thanks to these skills, students will be able to adopt a critical posture when reading and will be able to make optimal use of the texts in their future work and research. Over the course of the course, the readings will also give an overview of some areas of research in development.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

French reading skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The lessons will be based on reading texts. Several texts will be sent to all students before each session. In turn, the students will either have to present a text using the reading grid presented in the first class, or discuss the text and its presentation. These two tasks should be done taking into account the reading grid (questions) presented during the first session.
The students who present must have prepared a presentation support for the group and give it to the course supervisors 24 hours after presenting. The support provided must take into account the comments made during the supervisors' session.

The active participation of all is essential to facilitate the sessions.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The preferred method of teaching will be face-to-face, but if it is impossible to travel to or access the university, exchanges may take place by video conference (at the scheduled time for the course).

Recommended or required readings

All the articles proposed will have to be read for each session. They will be posted on eCampus one week before each session in pdf format.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Additional information:

Continuous Assessment: Students will be assessed for their individual presentation and for their role as discussant as well as for their participation in discussions.
Each student will have to present one or two texts according to a timetable fixed together in advance. Everyone should also be discussing during a session. These discussants are chosen on the day of the session. All the students must therefore have read the texts and prepared them in order to be the discussant (see reading grid presented in the first lesson).
In the event of a second session, the assessment will consist of an individual oral presentation of two texts not seen previously.
If we have to switch to distance learning, the course will be organized by videoconference and the same modalities will apply.
