Learning unit contents

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with psychology by making them aware of the scientific approach of this discipline. This course will present the main trends that have shaped the current landscape of psychological sciences. This background will allow students to better understand how psychological functioning is designed within these different approaches. The course will also aim to address certain key notions of health psychology (e.g., in particular communication in the care relationship) as well as certain health models. Finally, students will be made aware of the clinical approach in psychology (e.g., prevention).
Beyond theoretical notions, concrete examples will be used throughout the course sessions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

After this sequence of courses, students will be able to understand the nuances existing between the myths and the data coming from the scientific approach in psychology (e.g., the importance of the scientific method).
He will know the major theoretical perspectives in psychology and will be able to understand the different concepts of psychological functioning. It will have a better representation of the existing therapies and of their expected benefits.
He will be able to understand better - for instance - the issues of communication in the care relationship.

Written exam - in presence - in January and August.
For multiple choice questionnaire, the teacher keep the opportunity to suppress some questions which turns out to be ambiguous or misleading, in favor of the whole group.
