Introduction

This cours introduces qualitative research, as one of the methods used in social sciences.

Course and practical work

The course introduces the specificities of qualitative approaches through steps in a scientific research (data collection, analysis and interpretation). Grounded theory method (GTM) is introduced as a generic formalisation of qualitative research.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction

  • Understand the differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Understand the benefit of qualitative research in psychology and education

Course and practical work

The student will be able to:

  • given a research question, decide whether a qualitative or a quantitative approach is relevant,
  • accurately define qualitative terms,
  • designate a qualitative phenomenon.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Introduction

Fluency in French is mandatory. Students whose mother tongue is not French are encouraged to follow this course when they will have acquired a perfect mastery of French langage.

Course and practical work

  • Theorical sessions are ex cathedra teaching, using slides.
  • Practical work consists in realizing a qualitative research in teams (elaborating a research question, conducting and analysis of an interview).
