Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

After some theoretical complements given in the form of ex-cathedra courses, the students will be given a project which aims at extracting, purifying and characterizing completely from a chemical point of view (in view of their valorization) a molecule or a class of biobasedmolecules. A bibliographic study and visits to companies will allow students to prepare the manipulations they will perform in the laboratory. At the end of the experimentation, students will be asked to write a scientific article in English according to the format of the chosen journal.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Carry out a bibliographic research on a targeted topic;
- Choose and apply the appropriate protocols for the extraction and purification of bio-based molecules;
- Characterize completely by a combination of spectrometric techniques, in particular, bio-sourced molecules and interpret these data;
- Take a critical look at the valorization of bio-sourced molecules after possible chemical or enzymatic modifications;
- Write a scientific article in English based on the data they have generated.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

CHIM0718-1 Chimie biologique et génie des procédés correspondants
CHIM9269-1 Catalyse
CHIM9245-1 Analyse chromatographique
BIOL2019-1  Chimie théorique et physique appliquée à l'analyse structurale des biomolécules
CHIM1.11  Chimie analytique : techniques instrumentales

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mainly laboratory-based activities in a problem-based learning format
Attendance at all lab sessions is mandatory.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Activities mainly in the laboratory

Recommended or required readings

Articles from the scientific literature

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam

Written work / report

Additional information:

Attendance at labs is mandatory.
The publication written in English will be evaluated. It will be evaluated independently for its three components by the three supervising teams using the following weighting for the calculation of the final grade (Biorefinery 40%, extraction-purification 40%, chemical characterization 20%)
