Learning unit contents
This year's workshop focuses on the Torrentius Hotel in Liege. Built in the 16th century and attributed to Lambert Lombard, the building underwent several phases of transformation until the 20th century. After having been used as a police station, it was bought at the end of the 1970s by the architect Charles Vandenhove, who set up his office there. This transformation was the architect's first opportunity to work on an existing building. His interventions and the collaboration of several artists had a profound effect on the identity of the building.
In accordance with the wishes of Charles Vandenhove, who died in 2019, the Hotel Torrentius now houses the Jeanne and Charles Vandenhove Foundation, which has a cultural vocation. The architect's archives are kept there, and the modalities for adapting the building to host exhibitions and events are currently being studied. It is to this new adaptation that our workshop intends to contribute.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To investigate, within a short time, a specific question relating to intervention on an existing building, by combining research and field studies.
Learn to collaborate towards a common goal, working as a team.
Produce synthetic documents presenting scenarios.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Architectural history courses in the bachelor cycle.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The workshop is organised in four stages:
- Thematic studies during the first two weeks (15-23/9); students work in small groups to investigate questions prior to developing adaptation scenarios;
- an educational trip (24/9);
- a one-week international workshop (27/9 to 2/10), during which students and teachers from the universities of Hasselt, Wuppertal and Eindhoven join the team in Liège. Inter-institutional groups are formed to work on adaptation scenarios for the building, at all scales (from detail to urban context).
- a time for finalising the presentation documents (publication of a report), from 5 to 8/10.
