Learning unit contents

The workshop is based on two axes:
1. Preliminary study: studies of the context, history, techniques and pathologies of a heritage property.   Work carried out in groups comprising:
- The execution of surveys of the parts of the building considered relevant to the development of the project, - the historical study and its context on the basis of archival sources and an archaeological reading of the investigated building, - the historiographical analysis of the literature and the research carried out on the invested building, - the identification of the construction materials composing the studied building and their different implementations, - the identification of the main pathologies presented by the building and the remedies to be implemented.
 2. Project for the rehabilitation, conservation and restoration of the building under study.
Work carried out individually on the basis of the results obtained in the preliminary study.
The coherence of the answers developed will be verified with the help of all the means at the architect's disposal in order to regain the uniqueness of the project and its functional integration in today's society.
Site visits but also a practical approach to the construction (active participation in the assembly, cleaning, etc. of masonry or other structures) will allow to diversify the pedagogical approaches and to fully anchor this workshop in an experiential dynamic.
This workshop meets the four transversal axes of reflection developed by the Faculty of Architecture. Investing, maintaining and bringing up to standard an edifice perfectly integrates the notion of sustainability. Investing in a pre-existing building by elaborating a contemporary architectural project is to develop the creative dimension of the architect, it is to offer the possibility of establishing a sensitive dialogue between old and new. It is also to allow to enhance the value of the property by elaborating technical, functional, or organizational solutions with all the necessary creativity. This approach is based on the mastery of a range of digital technologies, in particular graphic data acquisition and computer-aided design.  The maintenance and transformation of "old" buildings fully integrates the current societal debates and heritage policies implemented.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1. To apprehend the foundations of the disciplines envisaged by the workshop and their own methodology (geometrical documentation, archaeology of the built environment) from a theoretical contribution, but also from contact with heritage professionals.
2. To acquire, implement and experiment in a practical way the recording and reading tools of the different disciplines mobilized in this workshop, but also in the undergraduate courses.
3. To draw up a synthesis of all the data collected in the field, in the archives and in a bibliographical research. This synthesis will take the form of an oral presentation on site and a study report (preliminary study report).
4. To identify the salient elements identified in the preliminary studies in order to develop and implement a quality architectural project that takes into account the rich heritage of the building being invested.
5. To develop and enrich the creative process of each student based on the existing building.
