Learning unit contents

Scientific English II

This English course continues the language training of Veterinary students by focussing on the oral understanding of veterinary information.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

The objective of this theoretical and practical training is to help students read scientific information in a critical way and be prepared for the Evidence-based Medicine approach, which will be developed in master.
Acquired knowledge and skills will prove useful during university education and professional career.

Integration activities

Owing to unexpected staff cuts in the team with which the Faculty works for integration classes, the activity can't unfortunately be organized during this 2020-2021 academic year.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Scientific English II

The objectives of the English course are twofold:

  • develop the understanding of scientific information presented orally, and
  • reinforce the students' knowledge of the vocabulary of veterinary English through various listening comprehension and note-taking exercises.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

This training will enable students to carry out literacy information research.
It involves a two-pronged approach:

  • a theoretical part, in amphitheater, which will enable students (i) to identify the different types of scientific papers, (ii) understand the notion of biased rendering of information, and (iii) skim resources to select the most appropriate data,
  • a practical part, given in small groups, which will enable students (i) to acquire the necessary independence to select relevant resources in order to solve a given problem, (ii) to read a scientific paper and assess its quality (method, bias, etc.) using an checklist.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Scientific English II

The English Listening Practice module of the course consists of a theoretical introduction, graded listening comprehension exercises on eCampus, and an exam that will verify the students' ability to take notes during a short lecture and answer precise questions on the topic of the lecture.
In the course of the year there will be four compulsory listening comprehension tests on eCampus and several in-person or online LC exercises (depending on the sanitary situation). All those tests aim at helping the the students test and improve their ability to understand specialised information given orally. The latter are scheduled on CELCAT.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

In-class course - depending on the evolution of the Covid-19 sanitary situation

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Scientific English II

The listening comprehension quizzes scheduled to take place in class will be offered online so long as the sanitary situation makes it necessary.
In an effort to limit the propagation of the virus, the January exam will take place online. It will consist of questions based on a video. The exam will be comparable to the tests held during the first semester. Same types of questions taken randomly from a question pool.
The exam will be timed and wrong answers will be penalized.
All the necessary information about the online exam (duration, type of questions, penalties, etc.) will be available on eCampus in late December.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

If the sanitary situation requires it, all courses will be offered online. If necessary, exams will also take place online (eCampus).
Students will be informed in due time of any changes in the way the course will be taught and assessed.

Recommended or required readings

Scientific English II

  • The course videos, notes and calendar are on e-Campus.
Course notes (Powerpoint slideshows) are available on eCampus after the exercise sessions.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

Course notes (powerpoint slideshows used during the theoretical course) are available on eCampus.
The reference books listed in the course notes are library resources at the disposal of all students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

The marks obtained for the different modules of VETE2109 will be merged in a single grade out of 20, with English accounting for 60%.  Owing to unexpected staff cuts in the team with which the Faculty works for integration classes, the activity can't unfortunately be organized during this 2020-21 academic year.
The global grade for VETE2109 is a weighted mean of the marks obtained in the two modules of the course, except if one of the two module marks is smaller than 8.0/20. In this case, it is that fail mark (less than 8.0) that will be used as global grade for the course VETE2109.

Scientific English II

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

The marks obtained for the different modules of VETE2109 will be merged in a single grade out of 20, with English accounting for 50%.      The students' ability to accurately understand veterinary information given orally will be assessed through a compulsory listening comprehension and note-taking test. The students will be asked to listen to a 15-minute veterinary talk and answer MCT questions and a few short-answer open questions based on the notes they have taken.
The English module is assessed twice in January (50% of the module grade) and in June (50% of the module grade). There's only one listening comprehension in the resit.    In September, the students have to resit only the modules for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.00/20.
Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.00 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.
