Learning unit contents

The course provides an introduction to the reading and translation of Dutch historical texts and a reflection on translation and its historiographical impact. The texts studied focus mainly on the contemporary period (history of Belgium and the Netherlands, general history). Grammatical difficulties will occasionally be reviewed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able to translate historical Dutch texts into French using appropriate tools, and to critically approach translated sources.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Passive knowledge of Dutch and excellent active knowledge of French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is conceived as a seminar. Attention will be paid to the students' reading skills as well as to the extension of their lexical and grammatical knowledge in Dutch. During the class, the students' translations will corrected and commented upon. The seminar will be supllemented by lectures in which the main points of translation theory as well as the main linguistic features of ancient and modern Dutch historical texts will be discussed.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person


Additional information:

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for one third of the June final grade. Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.
The 2hour- written exam consists of 3 parts: 
(1) Translation of a part of a text from Dutch to French. 
(2) Comprehension questions relating to the entire text. 
(3) Critical feedback on the translation process.
