Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In this course, the basic concepts of statistics are presented. Most of them have already been introduced in secondary school but this course aims at insisting on the interpretaiton and the good use of the techniques.
More precisely, the course will consist of the following chapters:
- Basic concepts (types of variables, percentages and rates)
- Data presentation and visualization
- Data summary
- Bivariate analysis

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the cours, thestudent should be able to present and summarize data in a clear and correct way. Moreover, he·she sould be able to interpret basic statistics (for ex in the media) with a critical mind.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

There is no prerequisite in statistics.
However, even though the mathematical justifications are kept to the minimum, a good use of statistics is only possible with some mathematical background (equation of straight lines, areas of circular sectors, developement of (a+b)^2...). Most of these concepts will be revised in the math course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Ex-cathedra exposition of theory
- Personal resolution of exercises, with the possible help of assistants.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The presentaiton of the theory will be done by means of videos put on line on MyUliège. Q/R sessions will be organised during the practicals.
The practical sessions will be organised in face-to-face. The information concerning the schedules, classrooms and groups will be available on eCampus and Celcat.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

While possible, the organisation of the lectures/practicals, as well as the exam organisation will be as stated in the corresponding sections.
If the orange or red code is in application during the first semester/during the exam period, then the following adaptations will be made:
- No major change for the exposition of theory (videos); the QR sessions will be organised in a virtual way via Collaborate.
- The practicals will be organised via a virtual classroom on Collaborate.
- Exam: it will a be distance exam on the platform eCampus (MCQ on one side and up-loading of written solutions on the other side).

Recommended or required readings

Lecture notes and the slides will be provided on eCampus.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
