Learning unit contents

The seminar on international relations aims to explore some contemporary issues on international relations. The seminar is divided in three groups. At the head of each group is an animator responsible for a particular theme. Students therefore have the possibility between several themes. The seminar will analyse and deepen several concepts such as: power, rising power, multipolarity, apolarity, multilateralism, world order,...
The student will also have the opportunity to expand her/his knowledge on a particular geographical area of her/his choice/ a theme of her/his choice or among those proposed.
The three groups of the seminar are:

  • The new international balance of power: actors, strategies and world order;
  • The diffusion of global power from state actors to non-state actors, private and transnational;
  • US Foreign Policy in a Multipolar World: actors, issues and influences.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

It gives the opportunity to the students to deepen an issue handled during the courses on Introduction to international relations and/or on Theories of international relations. At the end of this seminar, the student will be able to carry out a research on a particular issue by mobilizing the specific tools of the discipline. The student will also have learned how to communicate the results of her/his research both orally and in writing.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students need to have some empirical and theoretical knowledge in international relations.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Oral presentation, written paper and obligatory reading(s).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The first part of the teaching takes place in the form of very limited ex-cathedra lessons (two or three sessions). Then, two or three reading sessions are planned. The rest of the course is intended for oral presentations of students on a specific topic. This is a political science seminar, therefore, the presence and active participation of students are strongly recommended throughout the semester. Depending on the opportunities presented, a limited number of external speakers will be invited to participate in the course.
In case of return of distance-learning, the eCampus platform will be mobilized via the Collaborate tool in order to maintain the courses and oral presentations via the platform's video-conference system.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

In case of return of the pandemic and the distance-learning, the eCampus platform will be mobilized via the Blackboard Collaborate tool in order to maintain the courses and oral presentations via the platform's video-conference system.
