Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The first session will be devoted to the presentation of the formal differences between scientific and non-scientific literature. The second will focus on trends in development anthropology and more specifically on discourse analysis. All the other sessions will be based on texts dealing with various themes in the field of development and which we will discuss as a group in order to understand the differences between the types of publication.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the reading, comprehension and analysis of scientific articles, and to provide them with the tools allowing them to distinguish gray literature, scientific and non-scientific literature in the field of development. Thanks to these skills, students will be able to adopt a critical posture when reading and will be able to make optimal use of the texts in their future work and research. Over the course of the course, the readings will also give an overview of some areas of research in development.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
French reading skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The lessons will be based on reading texts. Two texts will be sent to all students before each session. During the course, students will either have to present a text using the reading grid presented in the first course, or discuss the text and its presentation based on a common question also communicated in the first course. The participation of all is essential to facilitate the sessions.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The preferred method of teaching will be face-to-face, but if it is impossible to travel to or access the university, exchanges may take place by video conference (at the scheduled time for the course).
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
If health measures require it, classroom sessions will switch to distance learning.
In this case, the course sessions will be given live and recorded on the collaborate platform (e-campus), on the same terms as the face-to-face courses (presentation of texts, discussion, debates, etc.).
Recommended or required readings
All the articles proposed will be mandatory reading. They will be sent to you by email before each session in pdf format.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Continuous Assessment: Students will be assessed for their individual presentation as well as for their participation in discussions. Each student will have to present a text according to a timetable fixed together in advance. Everyone will also have to start the discussion on the text at least once. These discussants are chosen during the course.
In the event of a second session, the assessment will consist of an individual oral presentation of two texts not seen previously.
If we have to switch to distance learning, the course will be organized by videoconference and the same modalities will apply.
