Learning unit contents

This course is aimed at introducing students to urban socio-anthropology from the perspective of cultural diversity, ethnicity and race, starting on the one hand from the study of classical texts which renewed the knowledge about groups associated to migration and cultural diversity (the Chicago School, cultural studies or the post-colonial turn in sociology and anthropology, the intersectional approach); on the other hand, from fieldwork and observation in particular as tools and methods of analysis of social processes.
Following an introductory section composed of four lectures devoted to the ways in which these groups have been thematised, students will be invited during two days to do some fieldwork in the city of Liege. In this context, students will first choose a short itinerary to analyse the representation of cultural diversity at the visual level. Then, interacting with one site (and its social actors) identified during the preliminary exploration, will let students to consider the construction of fieldwork "at home" and the deconstruction of common knowledge, in favour of a critical socio-anthropological gaze on the representation of cultural diversity. These two days will be supervised by the teacher and will lead to a written work. Within the framework of this written work, students will objectivize their ethnographic practice in view of the object of the course and of the theoretical contributions discussed.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

In the event that institutional measures aimed at the current health situation should constrain face-to-face lessons and fieldwork, other modalities will be discussed and applied, such as: online lessons through Lifesize at the address https://call.lifesizecloud.com/5724373 ; online ethnography, gathering of visual material, auto-ethnography, etc.
The evaluation modality will remain the same regardless of any changes in the measures aimed at the current health situation. Nevertheless, there could be an adjustment of the fieldwork.
