Learning unit contents

This course aims to support students in carrying out their personal project and produce a scientific work.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this seminar, students will be able to produce a personal work structured and reflexive, based on a clear and relevent research issue. The student will make sure to demonstrate critical distance from his research subject. He or she will mobilize wisely a qualitative scientific literature as well as appropriate methodological tools. 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Course with theoretical introductions and practical exercises.
It will familiarize students with the formal guidelines for writing their personal project or their thesis, during the Master in Population and Development Studies. Classes will help students conduct bibliographic research, write a bibliography, formulate research questions and hypotheses, and make choices related to methodology or field of research.
Students will have mutiple opportunities to meet with teachers to discuss the progress made on their personal project (or their thesis), and ask questions.

Seminars, exercises.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

If health measures require it, classroom sessions will switch to distance learning.
In this case, some class sessions will be recorded on the e-campus platform and made available to students in accordance with the face-to-face schedule, other sessions will be given live on the collaborate platform (e- campus) in order to allow exchanges between teachers and students and to answer the various questions.
The teaching method of each session will be communicated to the students at the latest the week preceding each course.

A PPT will also be available, repeating the theoretical parts of the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Students will be assessed through :


- Presence and participation in the course sessions and exercices.    - The evaluation of the course is inseparable from the evaluation of the TP. The evaluation is carried out jointly by the promoter of the TP (50%) and one of the seminar teachers on the basis of the criteria set out in the TP regulations (50%). But also on the basis of the information given during the sessions and exchanges with the teacher.
